History

Tawang Monastery (Galden Namgey Lhatse)

The Tawang Monastery is the spiritual heart of the region and the largest monastery in India. This 17th-century monastery is a serene and majestic place perched at an altitude of 10,000 feet.

Sela Pass

At an elevation of 13,700 feet, Sela Pass is a breathtaking gateway to Tawang. This high-altitude mountain pass remains snow-covered for most of the year and offers stunning views of the Eastern Himalayas.

Nuranang Waterfall (Jang Falls)

Located about 40 km from Tawang, Nuranang Waterfall is one of the most spectacular yet lesser-known waterfalls in India. Also known as Jang Falls, this 100-meter-high waterfall is a hidden gem that cascades through dense green forests.

Tawang War Memorial

The Tawang War Memorial is a tribute to the Indian soldiers who fought bravely in the 1962 Indo-China war. The 40-foot-high structure, designed in a stupa-like form, stands as a reminder of the courage and sacrifices made during the conflict.

Pangang Teng Tso Lake (PT Tso Lake)

Pangang Teng Tso Lake, also known as PT Tso Lake, is a beautiful glacial lake situated about 17 km from Tawang. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and blooming rhododendron forests (in spring), this pristine lake remains frozen during the winter months, adding to its mystic charm.

Sangetsar Lake (Madhuri Lake)

A short drive from Tawang lies Sangetsar Lake, more popularly known as Madhuri Lake after actress Madhuri Dixit filmed a scene for the Bollywood movie Koyla here.

Bum La Pass

Located at an altitude of 15,200 feet, Bum La Pass is a significant border pass between India and China. This strategic point played an important role during the 1962 Sino-Indian War, and today it is a popular destination for adventure travelers.

Taktsang Gompa

Situated 50 km from Tawang, the Taktsang Gompa (also called the Tawang Tiger’s Nest) is a sacred monastery perched on the edge of a cliff. This remote and serene spot is believed to be one where Guru Padmasambhava meditated.

Gorichen Peak

For adventure enthusiasts, Gorichen Peak is an exciting trek and one of the highest peaks in Arunachal Pradesh. Standing at an imposing 22,500 feet, it is a challenging expedition that rewards trekkers with incredible views of the Eastern Himalayas.

Urgelling Monastery

Urgelling Monastery is another important spiritual site, known as the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama. Located just a few kilometers from Tawang, the monastery is small but historically significant.

Permits: Since Tawang is in a sensitive border area, Indian and foreign tourists need special permits. Indian travelers must obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP), while foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP).
Altitude and Acclimatization: Tawang sits at a high altitude, so give yourself time to acclimatize. Drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous activity upon arrival, and move slowly to avoid altitude sickness.
Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit Tawang is between March and October. Spring and summer offer pleasant weather and blooming flowers, while winter can be harsh with heavy snowfall, though it adds to the town’s charm for those who love snow.
